  20. <p>     [Sakharov began writing for scientific journals around 1947,
  21. but every article had to be free of secret information and,
  22. worse, had to get past GLAVLIT, the state censor.]
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     GLAVLIT had an interminable list of subjects forbidden not
  25. only in the interests of secrecy but also out of political
  26. considerations. It was forbidden to publish information about
  27. crimes, alcoholism, health conditions, education, the water
  28. supply, suicides, the supply and production of nonferrous
  29. metals, precise data on the population's nutrition and income,
  30. movie-and theater-attendance figures. Data about measures to
  31. safeguard the environment and information about natural
  32. disasters and accidents could not be published without special
  33. permission. GLAVLIT's imprimatur was also required for all
  34. literary works and for just about everything published in the
  35. country, down to advertisements and the labels on matchboxes.
